RELUCTANT PRINCE BY KATE HOFMAN

Legions of Kate Hofman fans will be delighted to hear Kate has a new release, her long-awaited Reluctant Prince.  "Prince" is available only in print at this time, so those who want this fantastic cover of model Billy Freda are in luck.

I will be giving you teasers of this great "little" book (well, it isn't little, but it is an easy read!).  I had the pleasure of seeing this one before it was released and all I'll tell you is that it's an uplifting tale of true love conquering all.  And in usual Kate Hofman style, there's quite a bit of "all."  Those of you who follow her know what I mean.

Later in the week Kate will be offering a copy of the book, so be sure to stop back.

Let's take a look at the introduction of our hero:

Excerpt from “RELUCTANT PRINCE”
Prince Armando di San Raffaele is on the mezzanine of his new hotel, watching the guests mill about below him at the opening festivities.
The excerpt begins here:

Scanning the crowd lazily, his attention was drawn to a woman who seemed to hold herself aloof from the celebrating crowd.  She seemed to be more interested in the furnishings of the room than in the people.  From where he stood, she seemed to be petite and elegant, coppery highlights showing in her luxuriant brown hair, when she turned her head.    An eyebrow-length, wispy fringe softened her hair style.  He thought she stood out because of the simplicity of her dress, the cut superlative, the black fabric probably crêpe de Chine—since it clung in all the right places, reaching just over the knee.  And from where he was standing, he had an unusually good view of her cleavage—dear God, that was worth a second look, close up…
Although her heels were high, they weren’t the usual 5” stilettos.  She walked with an easy grace, not teetering on too-high heels.
He frowned when he saw a heavy-set man lurch forward to approach her from behind, bumping into her—purposely, he felt sure.  She took a step aside, and even from the balcony he could see she gave the man a disgusted look.  Meanwhile, the man’s motor mouth was moving a mile a minute, without making any impression on the woman, who frowned, occasionally shaking her head.  When she turned away, he put his fat hand on her arm—to hold her back?
Suddenly no longer bored, Armando went over to the grand stairway which led from the mezzanine to the great reception area.  As he flew down the stairs two at a time, he saw the woman go into the gardens through the French doors opposite to where the stairway ended.  To his disgust, the fat guy was still in hot pursuit.
When Armando slid through the French doors, he saw the woman instantly—she was walking on the outside balcony, still pursued by the creep—his private name for the man making an evident nuisance of himself.
He heard the woman say, “For the last time, I design interiors for your firm, a business arrangement…”
The man sneered, “Your nose in the air attitude doesn’t put me off in the least, Pammipoo.  If you know what’s good for you, you’ll change your tune and be very, very nice to me, or your job is toast.”  With that, he seized the woman’s upper arms, trying to turn her to him—stretching his beefy neck as far as he could, pushing his rubbery lips forward—evidently trying to kiss her.  “Owww!” he yelled, halted for a moment.  “You bitch, you dared kick me!  I’ll make you pay for this, and you’re coming with me right now to start the first instalment.”
“Take your hands off me,” the woman bit out, her tone outraged.  Although she had spoken quietly, the attacker stopped his attempt to force his slobbery mouth onto hers, but only for a moment.   Doing his best to claw his hands around her, his face became distorted with rage when the woman kicked him again.  “No!” she insisted, speaking more loudly—her hands pushing at him to keep him away.
And then Armando was there.  He said, his tone commanding and ice-cold, “The lady said No.  Step back.”  Furious at being thwarted in his plans to force the woman to have sex with him, the man tried to take a swing at Armando, missing ludicrously, losing his balance in the attempt.  When he had righted himself, Armando hit him with precision on the jaw, and the man went down.  Without looking around—for Armando knew he was always kept in view by at least one bodyguard—he said, “Dispose of this.  Not on these premises.”
“Yes, Sir.  Of course not here, Sir.”  Bryce looked around and whistled softly between his teeth.  Another man came forward out of the shadows.
“Jock, help me dispose of this, somewhere in an alley.  I have my car here on the apron at the end of the garden.”
          “Guid mon.”
Bryce grinned.  “You fake Scotsman—I know for a fact that you’ve never even been to Scotland.”
Jock responded, “I’m no fake—I’m a McTavish.  My parents are Scots.”  He slipped into his broad Scots accent again.  “Verra guid.”  The two men grinned at each other, carrying the heavy, unconscious body to the far end of the garden.
Armando did not bother to watch them, all his attention was for the woman who was—as he had guessed—petite and with a sensational figure.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t get to you more quickly,” he said.  “This must have been very upsetting to you.  Will you allow me to get you a drink, to calm you?
I have a suite here in the hotel.  And I assure you, you’ll be quite safe with me.
I’m not in the habit of forcing myself on unwilling ladies.”
The woman glanced at him, and seemed to get some of her cool back.
“I shouldn’t think you’d have to,” she said, with a brave attempt at a smile.  “And your offer of a haven to sit down and get over this—this unpleasantness…”  She sighed.  “It’s very welcome, thank you.”  Her voice was soft and melodious.
“Allow me to introduce myself—Armando di San Raffaele.”  The woman gazed at him in amazement.
          “B-but y-you are—”
“The owner of the Bijou Hotel chain, yes.”
She seemed to pull herself together with an effort.  “My name is Pamela Stanhove,” she said.

LOVE TO THE RESCUE is now out!

The clashing relationship between tomboy Josie Miller and fellow paramedic-firefighter, Pete Miller, escalates after he realizes Joe is not just one-of-the-boys. Pete has a sketchy history and has earned a reputation for one-night stands in the small town of Parmenter, New Hampshire nestled between the Mercy River, the mountains, and the state college. Since he arrived a year ago, Josie suspects he is hiding something. Something too horrible to share, even with her. Working side by side, Joe loves her job, and Pete.

They respond to accident calls, medical emergencies, and fast-moving forest fires amid sparks of another kind. Joe’s clumsiness and baggy uniform work against her when she yearns to be the kind of woman Pete wants like the pretty blonde they must rescue after her car hits a moose.

Outside influences come to play when the sister of Pete’s alleged victim shows up and accuses him of something even worse…her sister’s recent death. Once on track to be a doctor, the sister’s betrayal and lies caused Pete to run far away and keep women at a distance unless they agreed to share his bed…and nothing more.

Pete plans to skip town while Josie worries she has given her heart to a monster. His boss and the local police back off and he professes his innocence to Joe. After kissing her senseless, she lets him into her bed until her bothers intervene. Both keep an eye on Pete. A suicide note, some well-landed fists, stolen moments of love, and a desire to listen to their hearts lead these two heroes toward a climax filled with tension, pain, bloodshed, and atonement.

Okay, I hear you. Where did I come up with this story, you ask? Simple…I volunteered in the small town where my husband and I settled after college. We bought a 1860s farmhouse, raised two dogs, then a couple of boys, and learned to PAY IT FORWARD. Cub Scout Den Leader, School board President, Hospital Auxiliary Member, Alumni Class Agent, EMT, firefighter…my hubby and I covered it all. Story ideas rose from every crash, medical call, building fire, and snowmobile rescue. We loved our little town of Rumney, New Hampshire, and loved its lakes, rivers, and moutains.

I began stories set in such a place in last fall's DESTINY'S MOUNTAIN. Many MORE memories have surfaced on the pages of my newest romantic suspense, LOVE TO THE RESCUE, released August 11th by Red Rose Publishing.

EXCERPT

Josie grabbed a towel and wiped up the spill. A prickling sensation raced up her spine. She glanced up to find the shadow of a man standing in the doorway.
“I see my words didn’t sink in,” Pete said.
“What words? And what are you doing—”
“Going around half–naked is dangerous.”
“You have got to be kidding,” she said in her defense, but her arms hugged her waist under his glare.
“Scantily dressed in an unlocked, public building. You’re a target. Any idea how long I’ve been standing here watching you?”
Shaking, she glared back, wishing he’d disappear.
“Lovely hips.”
“Excuse Me?” Had he really said lovely hips? Puzzled, she pretended not to show fear until she recalled Sherri Barrington’s accusations.
“You can’t pretend you’re not scared.” His words traveled the ever decreasing space between them on a whisper.
Clammy palms slid down both naked thighs. Moisture dripped into the cleft between her breasts. “That woman. She made some powerful accusations. Are they true?”
“Why should you believe me? You’re only my partner,” he smirked.
“Why should I believe you? Lately, your manner had been unpredictable. Erratic. Until I know the truth, I suggest you keep your distance,” she said, even as he moved closer.
“You’re the one wearing silky running shorts and a sports bra. It wouldn’t take much for me to strip you naked.”
She gulped and slapped a hand over her stomach.
“So, are you afraid? Or excited?”
She locked eyes with his. Fear pulsed through her body along with other sensations. His intensive gaze roamed over her from head to toe and made her stomach clench. She couldn’t answer his question. She didn’t know the answer.

A GHOST OF A CHANCE - Minnette Meador

Today I'm delighted to announce a new release by my good friend Minnette Meador.

"A Ghost of a Chance" is Minnette's stroll into into the paranormal.  As you can see from her photo above, my friend has "that look" and this genre is a natural for her!  Although I was first drawn to her wonderful historical romances set in Roman Britain, "A Ghost of a Chance" left me alternately clutching my sides in laughter and wondering how she did it.

BLURB:

Keenan Swanson is your typical, everyday graphic designer. Well, except for the hundreds of pesky, prank-loving poltergeists that make his life interesting (in a Chinese curse sort of way). He finds his situation precarious yet manageable—until witty, smoking-hot coworker Isabella enters the scene and Keenan decides he wants her all for himself. With a horny succubus who has other ideas, a burly city cop determined to lock Keenan away, and an evil entity who’s hell-bent on using Keenan’s seed to create a living demon, the reluctant psychic realizes he just might not come out of this alive—or with heart intact.

EXCERPT:
CHAPTER ONE – LIVING WITH STRANGERS
“Isabella, isn’t it?” Keenan hadn’t seen a ring on her finger, around her neck, or a Love John Forever tattoo any place noticeable, so he assumed she was available.
“Right. You’re Keenan. We met the other day.”
“Right.”
Usually he didn’t have problems talking to girls, but now it was harder than it had ever been. A hundred witty comebacks crowded his brain for attention, but not one of them could make it past the lump in his throat. His growing cock wasn’t going to be much help either; all it wanted him to do was blurt out, “Ya wanna?”
Bracing himself against possible rejection, and telling his cock to shut the fuck up, Keenan gathered his courage and charged into the fray. “Say listen, if you’re not…”
The elevator jarred to a halt and the doors burst open in front of them. At least fifteen people piled into the box, disregarding the “maximum occupancy” sign.
Keenan hit his back hard against the railing and suddenly found his arms full of warm, healthy girl.
The sounds around him came to a crashing halt when he fixated on those gorgeous almond eyes and full red lips. The urge to devour that mouth was irresistible. He felt like he was home. Her balmy scent marinated his brain, clouding out everything else. The velvet skin of her naked arms made his palms tingle.
A sudden terror seized him when he realized his rod stood at full attention, shouting, “Yippee!” Since the crowd had crushed Isabella against him, she must have felt it jumping like an excited dog against her stomach. To Keenan’s amazement, she didn’t say a word and smiled sweetly up at him. Her expression was almost pleased. It boggled his mind.
“Sorry,” he managed after a few precious seconds.
He let go and fully expected her to scrunch as far away from him as possible, a murmured “pervert” escaping her lips. Instead, she slid up next to him and stayed attached to his shoulder, turning her lovely breasts to the doors.
Keenan had a hard time keeping his eyes off them, noting with interest that both nipples were little rocks against the black fabric. He forced himself to focus on the bald spot on the head of the guy in front of him. He hoped to God the man wasn’t pushed back; in Keenan’s current state, it might be difficult to explain what rested against the man’s ass.

HISTORICAL ANTHOLOGY BY VICTORY TALES PRESS

Just about the time Rebecca Vickery asked me to write a short story for her  Historical Anthology, I had been thinking of the poetry I wrote for forty years before I ever published a romance.  Some of that poetry was very romantic and much of it was based on the Irish Bardic poetry of my childhood.  The echo of that style can be heard in the works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, W. B. Yeats and Dylan Thomas, but the earliest written Bardic poetry dates back to about the 6th century, and the oral traditions of bards greatly pre-date that.  The “Tain Bo Cuailnge”—the Cattle Raid of Cooley—falls into that category and is mentioned in my story, “Deirdre.”  Much of the Bardic writing would hardly be recognizable to modern readers as poetry, comprised as it was of long genealogical records and nearly journalistic accounts of deeds of lords and ancestors.  The ancient tale of Deirdre of the Sorrows, with which I was raised, falls roughly into that category and I had begun to wonder if I would like to undertake my own rendering of the ancient tale in a style reminiscent of Bardic poetry yet written as prose.  And another project was born!

Together with my contribution to the anthology you can also find a wonderful Highland romance and two pieces of Americana--one set against the backdrop of the Civil War, another in the early coal mining years of our new country.

FLY THAT FLAG!

Here in the United States of America, Monday May 30th will be celebrated as Memorial Day. A federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May, it is more than a day off from school or work. It was once known as Decoration Day and commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in military service to their country, whether here or abroad. History says it was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the devastating Civil War. After World War II, it was voted to honor all Americans who die in all wars.

Unfortunately, some people see the long holiday weekend as an excuse to party, drink, and take a few extra days off from work. Until you have someone in the service. I was one of ‘those people’ and, if I had the time off from work, devoted my free time to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and...drinking.

Not so, anymore. Once my husband and I started researching our family genealogy and I discovered my mom was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and dad was in the SAR, I was enthralled with how many of our ancestors served. My dad had a stint in the Navy, and my father-in-law was a career officer in the Air Force. We visited the graves of our ancestors, men who died in wars spanning the time since this country was new, starting with the French and Indian wars.

One spring, when we still lived in New Hampshire, my husband and I took a trip south to track down certain family members. My great-great-great grandfather was shot in the chest at the battle of Malvern Hill in Virginia and captured by the Confederates. His brother fought at Gettysburg and died in another battle near the end of the war. We found his name carved inside the New York Monument on Little Round top, then knelt by his small gravestone that we finally tracked down.

We visited the memorial of Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia where my husband’s great-great-great grandfather died near the end of the Civil War. The research, the family stories, and the graves opened our eyes, which made it hard to allow our youngest son to join the army back in 2002. After boot camp, being stationed in Germany, and a year serving in Iraq, he is home and continuing to serve in the Army Reserve. Happily, he lives nearby and is continuing his college education. He even helped me with my writing by coaching me on the correct military terminology when I wrote my contemporary military romance, UNWRAPPING CHRIS.

So, to my fellow Americans, enjoy your weekend but remember to make sure your flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. The morning position remembers the one million+ men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, the raised flag commemorates the living. Enjoy a family Barbeque, visit the beach, and honor your favorite soldier. Give them a big ‘Thank You.’

MY CABLE WENT OUT!!!

O-M-G.  Today my cable went out.  Totally out.  All day.  All day long!  It isn't right; it isn't fair.  I paid!  On time, even.  But it was....OUT!  No internet.  No cable TV.  Is this what drug withdrawal is like?  I've had flu that hurt less!

Really, it was terrible.  It was out when I left for work and then it was out when I came home for lunch.  I toyed with the idea of driving my laptop 19 miles to the nearest place I could plug it in but...I had to go back to work.  I passed two cable service trucks on my road on the way back to work.  Yes, I did stop and rolled down my window and asked them how soon I could have my cable back.  THEY DIDN'T KNOW!!!
It was torture.  All afternoon at work I worried whether I would have internet access when I got home.  I just knew it had to be fixed.  After all, at $88 a month, how could the cable company let me down like that???  ARGH.  Then I got home, clicked and entered and it said MY CONNECTIVITY HAD BEEN LOST!!!   I freaking knew my connectivity had been lost, all I wanted to know was when it was coming back.  I had a meltdown.  I screamed.  Really, really loud.  My dogs ran to the basement and I still haven't found the cats.  Oh, it was brutal.  You wouldn't have known me (well, maybe a couple of you would have. >:O)
Obviously I got it back.  I punched and clicked, beat up the mouse, unplugged and re-plugged every plug, DUSTED the plugs on my hands and knees, threatened, implored, kicked, screamed and whined and eventually it came back.  My-connectivity-had-been-lost.  HOW DARE THEY?
